As a responsible captain or master of a vessel,you are required to have the tools needed to ensure the safety of your passengers, crew and vessel, including proper charts. For most of us, that means paper charts.

Does the USCG even care if you have charts on board? The answer is simple. Yes.

  • First is it a requirement of the CFRs.
  • Second, they may request to see your charts during any boarding.
  • Third, if you are involved in a serious marine accident, it can be part of the investigation to determine negligence.

I always tell my students,“It is not the USCG you need to worry about, but the clients’ attorneys and admiralty law.”
