The Charter Boat Certificate which includes the OUPV, Masters Upgrade, Radar and GMDSS have been approved for the Montgomery GI bill.
Our course in partnership with Northeast Wisconsin Technical College has been accepted by USCG, and Naval for tuition assistance. The courses are also part of an affiliation with DANTES.
VETERANS
Changes to the post 911 GI bill also provide for non-college degree programs include training for jobs that are based on manual or practical activities related to a specific trade, occupation, or vocation such as being the captain of a 100 ton vessel.

Exam Sites: Explorer's Guide has just received approval to use DANTES exam sites, ESO's, and proctors within the US for military personnel. You will be able to take the exam close to your station. This minimizes your travel time and cost.
Information on military sea service: - Experience and service on military or foreign vessels is creditable towards eligibility for a U.S. Merchant Mariner’s Credential (MMC). Such service is subject to evaluation by the Coast Guard to determine that it is a fair and reasonable equivalent to service acquired on merchant vessels of the United States, with respect to grade, tonnage, horsepower, waters, and operating conditions.
Satisfactory evidence of U.S. military service means a Transcript of Military Sea Service or certified History of Assignments (a DD-214 is not sufficient evidence of sea service). If you do not already have proof of military sea service, you must fill out a Request Pertaining to Military Records (Form SF-180) to obtain your official Transcript of Military Sea Service. Send the request with your name and a return address, printed legibly, to the address of the record custodian for your branch of service noted on the back of the request form. In addition, if you are requesting records from before 1973 you should include your service number; after 1973 include your social security number.

Operator of Uninspected vessels (OUPV)
Inland at least 360 days since age 15 including 90 days in the last three years.
For Great Lakes you need the Inland service of which 90 days must be on the Great Lakes
For Near Coastal you need the inland time of which 90 days must be beyond the Boundary line as described in 46 CFR Part 7
Tonnage calculation for Masters License:
For 50 Ton Masters you need one day on a vessel over 5 net tons.
For 100 ton Masters you need EITHER:
1) Maximum tonnage on which 25% of required experience obtained, OR 2) 150% tonnage on which at least 50% of experience obtained.
So for a 100 ton license Inland or Great Lakes you need 90 days (25% of 360) on a vessel over 50 tons or 180 days on a vessel of at least 34 tons.
Double for Near Coastal
Below is an abbreviated excerpt of 46 cfr 10.213 related to military sea service.
§10.213Sea service as a member of the Armed Forces of the United States and on vessels owned by the United States as qualifying experience.
(a) Sea service as a member of the Armed Forces will be accepted as qualifying experience for an original, raise of grade, or increase in scope of all licenses.
The applicant must submit an official transcript of sea service as verification of the service claimed when the application is submitted. The applicant must also provide the Officer in Charge, Marine Inspection other necessary information as to tonnage, routes, horsepower, percentage of time underway, and assigned duties upon the vessels which he or she served.
Sea service will be evaluated equivalence to sea service acquired on merchant vessels and the appropriate grade, class, and limit of license for which the applicant is eligible. Normally, 60 percent of the total time on board is considered equivalent underway service;
To be eligible for a master's or chief engineer's unlimited license, the applicant must have acquired military service in the capacity of commanding officer or engineer officer, respectively.
(b) Service in deck ratings on military vessels such as seaman apprentice, seaman, boatswain's mate, quartermaster, or radarman are considered deck service for licensing purposes.
(c) In addition to underway service, members of the Armed Forces may obtain creditable service for periods of assignment to vessels at times other than underway, such as in port, at anchor, or in training. Normally, a 25% factor is applied to these time periods. This experience can be equated with general shipboard familiarity, training, ship's business, and other related duties.
(d) Sea service obtained on submarines is creditable, as if it were surface vessel service, for deck and engineer licenses under the provision of paragraph (a) of this section. For application to deck licenses, submarine service may be creditable if at least 25 percent of all service submitted for the license was obtained on surface.
(e) Service gained in a civilian capacity as commanding officer, master, mate, engineer, or pilot, etc., of any vessel owned and operated by the United States, in any service, in which a license as master, mate, engineer, or pilot was not required at the time of such service, is evaluated for a determination of equivalence.
