● Be a U.S. Citizen
● Speak and understand English
● Be able to get TWIC
Have required sea service - 360 days inland & 720 days near coastal. 90 days must have been logged in the last 3 years
● The tonnage on your license depends on your sea service. One day on a vessel over 5 gross tons gets you a 50 ton masters license; 180 days on a vessel over 34 gross tons or 90 days on a vessel over 51 gross tons gets you a 100 ton license. Remember for near coastal these number double.
Build on your OUPV license. They include:

  • Stability,
  • Manning,
  • Safety drill,
  • Ships construction,
  • Fire fighting,
  • Assistance towing,
  • And more.
Classroom classes normally are held after the OUPV license course at that location.
  • Appleton,
  • Sturgeon Bay
  • PLEASE NOTE: If you take this class and do not have the required sea service time for the near coastal route, your license will be approved for either a Inland or Great Lakes route. If in the future you want to upgrade to near coastal route, you will be required to retake the 50-question Rules Exam.
